WHAT IS THIS MOVING CHECKLIST PRINTABLE?
Moving house is a hundred small jobs pretending to be one big one — and the stress rarely comes from the heavy lifting. It comes from the job you remember at midnight, the booking you meant to make last week, the meter reading nobody took. A moving checklist spreads those hundred jobs across the eight weeks before the move, a few at a time, each with a box to tick. This moving checklist printable is free to download – print as many copies as you like.
It is for anyone changing homes: renters, buyers, families upsizing, couples downsizing, and first-timers who don’t yet know what they don’t know. The timeline works whether your move is across town or across the country — the jobs are the same; only the van is bigger.
The secret of a calm move is sequencing. Pack too early and you live in a warehouse; book too late and the good movers are gone. This page puts each task in the week where it actually belongs, so at any moment you only face this week’s handful of jobs — never the whole hundred at once.

WHAT’S INSIDE THIS MOVING CHECKLIST PRINTABLE
THE 8-WEEKS-OUT SECTION
The strategy section: declutter room by room so you never pay to move things you’ll throw away, gather quotes from three movers while their calendars are still open, start a moving folder, order boxes and supplies, and list everyone who’ll need the new address. Decluttering includes the digital sort-out — work through our digital declutter checklist now and the address changes, account logins and photo backups are half done before a single box is taped.
THE 4-WEEKS-OUT SECTION
Decisions become bookings: confirm the mover or the truck, take time off work, and start packing everything you don’t use weekly — books, decor, the good glasses. This is also the week to start eating down the freezer and pantry with intent; a half-empty freezer is cheaper to move and easier to defrost.
THE 2-WEEKS-OUT SECTION
Packing in earnest, room by room, every box labelled with its destination room — the five minutes per box that saves an entire day at the other end. Address changes go in now (bank, post redirection, subscriptions), along with the unglamorous valuables: documents, jewellery and chargers set aside to travel with you, never with the van. The boxes themselves get the full treatment in our packing checklist.
THE FINAL-WEEK SECTION
The countdown jobs: defrost the freezer, confirm the mover’s arrival time in writing, arrange the key handover for both homes, plan meter readings, and pack the famous essentials box — kettle, mugs, chargers, toilet roll, first-night bedding, the documents folder. Everything in this section exists to make the first night in the new place feel like an arrival, not a survival exercise.
MOVING DAY
A short, satisfying section for the day itself: meter readings in both homes, a final walkthrough of the old place checking every room and cupboard, keys handed over, and the essentials box opened first at the new end. Five boxes to tick while the kettle boils in your new kitchen.
HOW TO USE THIS MOVING CHECKLIST PRINTABLE
- Print the checklist the day the move becomes real — ideally eight weeks out — and pin it where the household actually gathers: the fridge door beats the home office. Tick boxes in pen; watching them fill is half the medicine.
- Work strictly top-down. Each week’s section is sized to fit around normal life; resist packing early just to feel busy. If you are starting later than eight weeks out, compress: the order matters, the spacing flexes.
- Keep the checklist in a moving folder with quotes, contracts and the new address written on the front. Every moving-related paper goes in the folder — on the day, the folder is the single source of truth.
- Book early and confirm late. Movers, cleaners, time off, childcare for moving day — everything bookable gets booked in its week, then re-confirmed in the final week.
- Label every box with its destination room and one word of contents, and photograph the important ones. Future-you, standing in the new hallway at 9 p.m. looking for the phone charger, sends thanks.
- After the move, give the checklist a fond farewell — then settle the new home into a rhythm with our weekly reset checklist, and keep a fresh moving checklist printable in the folder for the next move life eventually brings.
PRINTING TIPS
Print at “Actual size” or 100 percent scale. Print two copies if two adults are sharing the jobs — one master on the fridge, one in the moving folder — and sync them on Sunday nights. Both A4 and US Letter versions are included, and the black-and-white design prints cleanly on any home printer.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What if I only have three or four weeks until the move?
Start anyway, and compress. Work the 8-weeks section in the first two days, the 4-weeks section across the rest of the week, and protect the final-week and moving-day sections exactly as written — those are the ones that decide how the day itself feels. The order is the checklist’s real value; the calendar is negotiable.
What goes in the essentials box?
Whatever the first evening and morning need: kettle and mugs, tea and coffee, phone chargers, toiletries and toilet roll, a change of clothes, first-night bedding and towels, basic tools and tape, snacks, and the documents folder. It travels in your car, is the last box loaded and the first opened — label it like you mean it.
Is the checklist different for renters and buyers?
Almost everything is identical. Renters should add the landlord notice and end-of-tenancy clean to the early weeks; buyers add solicitor and completion-day calls to the final week. A dated, ticked checklist is evidence of a well-run move either way. Your moving checklist printable is ready below in both A4 and US Letter.
Who should hold the checklist on moving day?
One person — the move captain — holds the folder and ticks the day section as jobs complete. Everyone else asks the captain. It sounds formal; in practice it prevents the three-people-three-plans chaos that makes moving day stories so entertaining later and so miserable at the time.
